It is a large metal bridge (also known as the “suspension bridge”) that connects the cities of Portugalete and Las Arenas over the Nervion River, just outside Bilbao. It was built in 1893 and was the first metal bridge in the world.
It is made of 4 iron towers 61 meters high. The bridge is 160 meters long and 45 meters high. It has the ability to transport cars and people from one river bank to another. In 2006 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Transfers are made every 8 minutes during the day and every hour at night. The gondola can carry up to 6 cars as well as several people on each journey that takes 1.5 minutes.
Tourists can take the elevator and walk along the bridge, with stunning views over the river in both cities on each side.
If you just want to see the bridge, take the river cruise and you will go right under the bridge.
