Travel Tips: Christmas in Zurich

In December the whole Swiss city acquires a warm glow, filled with cinnamon aroma from glühwein and Christmas music. Outdoor Christmas markets, open shops until late at night, many events and concerts await you for an unforgettable Christmas in Zurich.

What to see and do in Zurich at Christmas:

The most impressive celebration is called
Lichterschwimmen and takes place every year on 12/18 at 6 p.m. 800 small floating candles start an atmospheric journey from the Stadthausquai to the Limmat River.

The traditional circus Conelli Christmas Circus offers modern performances with acrobats and clowns, full of colors and imagination. It is open until 4/1 and you will go by tram to the Bürkliplatz stop.
Find yourself in one of the markets of the city to try local delicacies but also to enter the Christmas mood. The most traditional market takes place in the picturesque square Niederdorf in the old town. You will find many stalls with products and items on Niederdorfstrasse, Hirschenplatz and Rosenhof. Open until 23/12.
An impressive market is organized at the main train station Christkindlimarkt against the backdrop of the tall Christmas tree decorated with Swarovski crystals.

It is the largest indoor Christmas market in Europe and is open until 12/24.

This is a small tent that has the shape of a tree, in which various choirs sing Christmas carols until 23/12.

Another beautiful flea market can be found in front of the Opera House. It is called Wienachtsdorf, has about 100 benches with the opera house illuminated and decorated. There you will also find an ice rink.

The Zurich National Museum presents an exhibition of mangers until January 4. Handmade traditional mangers along with impressive wooden figures which you can even buy, workshops for children, Christmas stories for young and old every day 10-5.

Be sure to try the cheese fondue in one of the many specialty restaurants.

On New Year’s Eve, the epic presentation of the sparklers takes place around the lake of Zurich. Every year there are about 200,000 visitors from Switzerland and other countries to enjoy the spectacle. The events start at 8 with drinks and flavors from around the world and culminate with the arrival of the new year and the throwing of fireworks.

The best shopping street is Bahnhofstrasse, in the city center.
